Welcome to The Were-Wolf Gallery. The images in this gallery are associated with a digital edition of Clemence Housman's The Were-Wolf, created by Lorraine Janzen Kooistra and her students in the MA in Literatures of Modernity program at Ryerson University, Toronto. Clemence Housman invented her gothic tale of supernatural transformation, set in pre-industrial Scandinavia, to entertain the women in her wood-engraving class in 1884. The story was published in the 1890 Christmas number of Atalanta, with illustrations by Everard Hopkins reproduced by halftone engraving. Clemence Housman published The Were-Wolf in book form with John Lane at The Bodley Head in 1896. This version was illustrated and designed by the author's brother, Laurence Housman, whose drawings she wood-engraved for the edition. The Were-Wolf Gallery includes the illustrations from both print versions of her story, and reveals Clemence Housman's skill as one of the best wood engravers in the British tradition.
